What personal data we collect and why we collect it


When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

Comments and other content submitted to Akismet anti-spam service are not saved on our servers unless agreed, or if they were marked as false positives, in which case we store them long enough to use them to improve the service to avoid future false positives.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Information requested on contact forms is limited to a name & an email address. Akismet will automatically scan these to limit danger to the site, for example from hacking or viruses. Subscription forms require only the same limited information. The information provided by the user may be stored on a local or server backup for as long as it is current & no request has been made to remove it. This backup is part of the normal housekeeping that makes it possible to restore the site if required.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information. Users on this site are the Administrator. The hosting service or agencies acting to repair the site may potentially require access.
